What to Do in a Pet Emergency in Blackheath SE3

A pet emergency rarely happens at a convenient time. It’s late on a Sunday evening, or you’re halfway through dinner, or you’ve just settled down for the night — and suddenly your dog is retching uncontrollably, or your cat won’t put weight on a leg, or something simply feels wrong. In that moment, knowing exactly what to do — and who to call — makes all the difference.

Here’s your guide to handling a pet emergency if you’re in Blackheath, SE3, or the surrounding area.

Step 1: Stay calm and assess the situation

Easier said than done, we know — but animals pick up on our stress, and a calm approach helps you think clearly and helps keep your pet settled too. Take a breath, and try to get a clear picture of what’s actually happening before you act.

Step 2: Know the signs that mean “go now, don’t wait”

Some situations are unmistakably urgent. Contact a vet immediately, without waiting to “see if it gets better,” if your pet shows any of the following:

  • Collapse, or inability to stand
  • Difficulty breathing, or laboured/rapid breathing
  • Seizures or repeated fitting
  • Heavy or uncontrolled bleeding
  • Suspected poisoning or eating something toxic (including chocolate, xylitol, certain plants, or human medication)
  • A bloated, hard, or distended abdomen — especially in deep-chested dog breeds
  • Repeated vomiting or straining without producing anything
  • Signs of severe pain — crying out, hunching, reluctance to move
  • Trauma from a fall, road traffic accident, or fight with another animal
  • Straining to urinate with little or no output, particularly in male cats

If in doubt, it’s always safer to call than to wait.

Step 3: Call before you travel

Whenever possible, phone ahead rather than arriving unannounced. This lets the team prepare for your pet’s arrival, gives them a chance to talk you through immediate first aid over the phone, and helps them prioritise if it’s genuinely urgent.

During Whisker & Woof’s normal opening hours, call us directly and we’ll guide you through next steps.

Outside of our normal hours, Whisker & Woof’s out-of-hours emergency care is provided by a dedicated third-party emergency service, so your pet is covered 24 hours a day, seven days a week — you’re never without support, even in the middle of the night.

You can reach the Whisker & Woof team at 0203 603 4843 or hello@whiskerandwoof.co.uk to be directed to the right place for your situation.
