GI problems can range from mild and short-lived to complex and long-term.
- Acute illness is often easier to spot — for example, sudden vomiting or diarrhoea after scavenging, a dietary indiscretion, or an infection.
- Chronic disease can be much more insidious. Subtle signs may include:
- Soft or loose stools
- Intermittent vomiting
- Eating grass regularly
- Weight loss or poor body condition
- “Fussy” eating habits or a reduced appetite
Research suggests that around 80% of “fussy” dogs have an underlying digestive disorder, and cats that vomit every 2–4 weeks almost always have some form of gut disease. Left undiagnosed, these conditions may lead to years of discomfort for your pet — and in some cases, can progress to more serious disease, including cancer.
