Certificate in Small Animal Medicine (CertSAM)

At Whisker & Woof, we are proud to offer a high level of medical care for your pets, led by our head veterinary surgeon Jason Way BVetMed CertSAM MRCVS. Jason obtained the prestigious Certificate in Small Animal Medicine in 2001, a postgraduate qualification that demonstrates advanced knowledge and skill in diagnosing and managing complex medical conditions in dogs and cats.

What the Certificate Covers

Small Animal Medicine is a broad and challenging discipline that includes:

  • Cardiac & Respiratory Disease – investigation and management of heart murmurs, heart failure, chronic cough, and breathing difficulties
  • Gastroenterology – advanced work-up of vomiting, diarrhoea, weight loss, and chronic gut conditions
  • Endocrine Disorders – diagnosis and management of diabetes, Cushing’s disease, Addison’s disease, thyroid disease, and other hormonal imbalances
  • Neurology – seizures, weakness, balance issues, and other neurological presentations
  • Haematology & Immune-Mediated Disease – anaemia, clotting problems, and autoimmune disorders
  • Dermatology & Ophthalmology – complex skin and eye diseases requiring a systematic approach

This qualification is designed for veterinarians who are passionate about investigating cases thoroughly, using a structured and evidence-based approach to reach an accurate diagnosis and develop an effective treatment plan.

Why This Matters for Your Pet

Having a vet with additional qualifications and nearly three decades of experience means:

  • Fewer Referrals Needed – many medical problems can be fully investigated and treated in-house, saving you time and reducing stress for your pet
  • Faster Answers – rapid access to advanced diagnostics such as blood testing, imaging, and endoscopy allows us to start treatment promptly

Comprehensive Care – we can manage chronic or complex conditions over the long term, ensuring continuity of care and better outcomes

Our Approach to Medicine

We believe that every patient deserves a thorough investigation. Whether it’s a sudden illness or a more complicated, long-standing problem, our aim is to:

  1. Take a detailed history and perform a complete physical examination
  2. Use targeted diagnostics to reach a clear diagnosis
  3. Discuss all available treatment options with you in plain language
  4. Provide tailored, compassionate care that meets your pet’s individual needs

Peace of Mind for Pet Owners

Knowing that your vet has advanced training in internal medicine gives you confidence that your pet is receiving a high standard of care. Most medical issues can be managed right here at Whisker & Woof, so your pet can stay with a familiar team and you can get answers quickly — reducing worry and expense.
