Pet Insurance

Peace of Mind for You, the Best Care for Your Pet

At Whisker & Woof, we strongly recommend that all pet owners take out pet insurance. Veterinary medicine has advanced significantly in recent years, allowing us to offer the same level of care that you would expect in human medicine — but this also means that costs can be significant when illness or injury strikes.

Having a good insurance policy ensures that you can make decisions about your pet’s treatment based on what is best for them, rather than being limited by financial constraints.

Why Pet Insurance Matters

Unexpected veterinary bills can be stressful and difficult to budget for. Insurance helps by:

  • Covering, or contributing towards, the cost of emergency surgery, hospitalisation, and diagnostics
  • Supporting the treatment of chronic illnesses (e.g., diabetes, heart disease, arthritis)
  • Giving you access to advanced treatments, such as endoscopy, ultrasound, and internal medicine work-ups
  • Helping you spread the cost of care through monthly insurance premiums

Our goal is to give your pet the best possible care while giving you peace of mind that financial worries won’t stand in the way.

Types of Pet Insurance

Policies can vary widely, so it’s important to choose one that meets your needs. Common types include:

  • Lifetime Cover – the most comprehensive option, covering ongoing conditions for the life of your pet (subject to annual limits)
  • Time-Limited Cover – covers a condition for a set period (usually 12 months) from the start of treatment
  • Accident-Only Cover – covers injuries but not illnesses

We are happy to discuss general considerations when choosing a policy, but we cannot recommend a specific insurer.

Insurance Claim Options

Direct Claims

In exceptional circumstances, and subject to a risk assessment, we may agree to claim directly from your insurer so that you only pay the policy excess and any non-covered items up front.

  • Risk assessment required before approval
  • Administrative fee applies for direct claims

Indirect (client-paid) Claims

For most claims, you will be expected to pay your invoice to us at the time of treatment, and we will process the claim on your behalf for reimbursement.

  • Claims processing fee applies
  • This option gives you faster treatment without waiting for insurer authorisation

For full details, please see our [Terms & Conditions] regarding insurance claims.

Our Approach

We aim to make the process as smooth as possible by:

  • Completing insurance claim forms promptly
  • Providing detailed clinical notes and invoices for your insurer
  • Keeping you updated on the status of your claim where possible

Plan Ahead

We recommend arranging insurance when your pet is young and healthy. Pre-existing conditions are often excluded from cover, so the earlier you start, the more comprehensive your protection will be. Once you are with an insurance company, we generally don’t recommend changing provider, as any medical conditions noted whilst with the original company, may then be excluded by your new insurer.
